Painter Cost Calculator

Planning to repaint a room or an entire apartment? This calculator estimates the total cost of hiring a painter based on wall area, number of paint coats and the initial condition of the walls. Labour and paint costs are calculated separately so you can see exactly where your budget goes.

How we calculate painter costs

The calculator multiplies the wall area by a labour rate that depends on the wall condition and number of coats (from 10 PLN/m² for new walls + 1 coat to 28 PLN/m² for damaged walls + 3 coats). Paint cost equals the number of coats × 3.50 PLN/m². The sum of both components gives the total estimated project cost.

Example: painting 80 m² of walls

Apartment, 80 m² of walls, good condition (new plaster), 2 coats of emulsion paint. Labour: 80 × 15 PLN = 1,200 PLN. Paint: 80 × 2 × 3.50 PLN = 560 PLN. Total: 1,760 PLN. For walls requiring renovation and 3 coats, the same area would cost: labour 80 × 24 = 1,920 PLN, paint 80 × 3 × 3.50 = 840 PLN, total 2,760 PLN.

Frequently asked questions about painter costs

How much does it cost to have walls painted by a painter?

In Poland in 2026, professional wall painting typically costs 10–28 PLN/m² for labour, depending on the wall condition and number of coats. Add approximately 3.50 PLN/m² per coat for paint. For a typical apartment with 50–80 m² of walls, the total cost ranges from 1,400 to 4,000 PLN.

What factors affect the painter's labour rate?

The labour rate is primarily affected by: the initial wall condition (new plaster is cheapest, damaged surfaces require more preparation work), the number of paint coats (1–3), the total area (larger jobs may attract lower per-m² rates) and geographic location (rates in large cities are 10–30% higher).

How many coats of paint are needed for wall painting?

For new, primed walls, two coats of emulsion paint are usually sufficient. When changing to a significantly lighter or darker colour, three coats may be required. One coat is only adequate for a colour refresh on a good surface with a similar shade. The calculator accounts for this in both labour and paint cost.

The calculator uses a rate of 3.50 PLN/m² per coat, reflecting the average price of standard emulsion paint and its typical coverage of 0.15–0.20 l/m². For 2 coats this equals 7 PLN/m², for 3 coats – 10.50 PLN/m². If you choose premium paint, adjust the estimate upwards by 30–50%.

The calculator covers side walls only. Ceiling painting is usually quoted separately at a similar rate (10–20 PLN/m²), but may require scaffolding or a ladder which can increase the cost. To include the ceiling, simply add its area to the "Wall area" field.

"New" means fresh plaster after construction or renovation, ready to paint after priming — the cheapest option. "Renovation" refers to walls after scraping old paint or with minor defects requiring filling. "Damaged" means surfaces with cracks, moisture damage or thick layers of old coatings — these require the most preparation work.

The calculator shows indicative gross prices including VAT. Painting services for private customers in Poland are subject to 8% VAT (residential construction) or 23%. When hiring a contractor, always check whether their quote is net or gross and which VAT rate they apply.

To reduce costs: 1) Prepare the walls yourself (clean, scrape loose paint) — the painter will charge less for labour. 2) Book in the off-season (autumn/winter). 3) Supply the paint yourself — you can choose a cheaper brand. 4) Commission multiple rooms at once to avoid repeated travel charges. 5) Get at least 3 quotes and compare.

An experienced painter covers 80–100 m² per day (2 coats). For 80 m² of walls with 2 coats, expect 1–2 working days, plus drying time between coats (4–8 hours). Heavily damaged walls requiring filling and sanding can extend the job to 3–4 days.

The results are estimates for budget planning purposes only. Actual costs may differ depending on the region, contractor expertise, access difficulties (high ceilings, furniture), room geometry (corners, window openings) and current material prices. Always obtain quotes from local painters before finalising your budget.

Calculator results are estimates only and do not constitute a commercial offer or quote. Actual costs depend on location, contractor experience, room specifics and current material prices. Always get multiple quotes from local painters before making a decision.
