Recipe Calorie Calculator — how many calories are in my dish

Want to know how many calories are in your favourite recipe? Enter the ingredients with their weights in grams, specify the number of servings, and the calculator will instantly show the total calories for the whole recipe and per serving. The calculator supports up to 6 ingredients across the most common food categories: flour, sugar, butter, oil, eggs, milk, meat, fish, vegetables, fruit, grains and more. Results include calories (kcal), protein, fat and carbohydrates — both for the full recipe and per serving. Values are based on average nutritional data for food categories (USDA / Polish GUS databases) and serve as estimates for home cooking. For precise figures, use the nutrition labels on specific products.

How the recipe calorie calculator works

For each ingredient the calculator computes: kcal = (kcal_per_100g × amount_g) / 100. The same formula applies to protein, fat and carbohydrates. All values are summed across ingredients with amount > 0 g, then divided by the number of servings. The ingredient dictionary contains approximate nutritional values for 20 food categories — from flour (360 kcal/100g) to vegetable oil (884 kcal/100g). Ingredients with 0 g or unknown products are ignored. Rounding: calories to whole numbers; protein, fat and carbs to 0.1 g.

Example: simple cake — 200g flour + 100g sugar + 80g butter + 2 eggs (110g) + 100g milk, 4 servings

Flour 200g: 720 kcal, 20g protein, 3g fat, 146g carbs. Sugar 100g: 400 kcal, 0g protein, 0g fat, 100g carbs. Butter 80g: 588 kcal, 0.4g protein, 65.6g fat, 0.4g carbs. Eggs 110g: 170.5 kcal, 14.3g protein, 12.1g fat, 1.1g carbs. Milk 100g: 60 kcal, 3.2g protein, 3.5g fat, 4.7g carbs. Total: ~1939 kcal, ~37.9g protein, ~84.2g fat, ~252.2g carbs. Per serving (4 servings): ~485 kcal, ~9.5g protein, ~21.1g fat, ~63.1g carbs.

Frequently asked questions about recipe calories

How do I calculate calories in a recipe?

Add up the calories from all ingredients. For each ingredient: (kcal per 100g × weight in grams) / 100. Example: 200g of wheat flour (360 kcal/100g) = 720 kcal. The calculator does this automatically for up to 6 ingredients and divides the total by the number of servings.

What are macronutrients?

Macronutrients (macros) are protein, fat and carbohydrates — the three main nutrient groups that provide energy. Protein and carbs supply about 4 kcal/g; fat supplies about 9 kcal/g. The calculator shows all three macros for the full recipe and per serving.

How many calories are in a typical home-baked cake?

A simple cake made with 200g flour, 100g sugar, 80g butter, 2 eggs (110g) and 100ml milk has roughly 1930–1960 kcal in total. At 4 servings that is about 480–490 kcal per slice. Exact values depend on ingredient proportions and types.

The calculator uses the calories of raw ingredients (weight before cooking). During cooking some water evaporates, which changes the weight but not the energy content — calories in the finished dish equal the sum of the raw ingredients. Baking reduces weight by about 10–20%, but the caloric value per serving stays the same.

The values are averages for food categories (e.g. "chicken breast", "mixed vegetables"). Actual values can vary by variety, brand and preparation. For precise calorie counting, use the nutrition labels on specific products or detailed food databases.

Kilocalorie (kcal) and kilojoule (kJ) are both units of energy. 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ. EU food labels list both values. The calculator uses kcal, which is the unit commonly used in diets and recipes.

Divide the total recipe calories by the number of servings. The calculator does this automatically — just enter the number of servings in the first field. Example: a recipe with 1200 kcal total divided into 4 servings = 300 kcal per serving.

Butter contains about 735 kcal per 100g (82% fat × 9 kcal/g ≈ 738 kcal, USDA data). It is one of the most calorie-dense kitchen ingredients. Vegetable oil is even higher — about 884 kcal per 100g, since it is 100% fat.

Chicken breast is about 165 kcal/100g (31g protein, 4g fat, 0g carbs). Salmon is about 120 kcal/100g (22g protein, 3g fat). Enter the raw weight before cooking — this is the standard way nutritional values are reported.

Yes — the calculator lets you quickly estimate the energy value of home-cooked meals and track calories and macros. Keep in mind that values are approximate. For precise dietary planning (e.g. for medical conditions or professional sports), consult a dietitian and use detailed nutritional databases.

Values are approximate. Food composition may vary by brand, variety and preparation method. The calculator does not replace nutritional labels or dietary advice.
