How we calculate fractions

For addition/subtraction we find the common denominator (LCM). For multiplication we multiply numerators and denominators. For division we multiply by the reciprocal. Result is simplified using GCD.

Example: 1/2 + 1/3

1/2 + 1/3 = 3/6 + 2/6 = 5/6 ≈ 0.833

Frequently asked questions

How do you add fractions?

Find a common denominator (LCM of denominators), convert both fractions, then add numerators.

How do you subtract fractions?

Same as addition — find common denominator, then subtract numerators.

How do you multiply fractions?

Multiply numerators together and denominators together: a/b × c/d = (a×c)/(b×d).

Multiply by the reciprocal: a/b ÷ c/d = a/b × d/c.

Divide both numerator and denominator by their greatest common divisor (GCD).

A fraction where the numerator is less than the denominator, e.g. 3/4.

A fraction where the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator, e.g. 7/4.

GCD (Greatest Common Divisor) is the largest number that divides both numerator and denominator evenly.

LCM (Least Common Multiple) is the smallest number that both denominators divide into — used for addition/subtraction.

Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions first: 1 3/4 = 7/4. Then use the calculator.
