Pace to Speed Calculator — runner's converter
Have a running pace in min/km and want to know km/h? Or a treadmill speed and need the pace? This calculator converts in both directions: pace (min/km) to speed (km/h) and back. It also calculates pace per mile for runners using Anglo-American scales. Results appear instantly.

How we convert pace to speed
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h). Pace per mile = pace (min/km) × 1.60934. Fractional minutes are converted to seconds: fraction × 60 = seconds.
Example calculation
Pace 5:30/km = 5.5 min/km. Speed = 60 ÷ 5.5 ≈ 10.91 km/h. Pace per mile = 5.5 × 1.609 ≈ 8:51/mile. Reverse: 12 km/h → pace = 60 ÷ 12 = 5:00/km = 8:03/mile.
Frequently asked questions
How do I convert running pace (min/km) to speed (km/h)?
Speed (km/h) = 60 ÷ pace (min/km). Example: pace 5:00/km = 60 ÷ 5 = 12 km/h. Pace 6:00/km = 60 ÷ 6 = 10 km/h.
How do I convert speed (km/h) to running pace (min/km)?
Pace (min/km) = 60 ÷ speed (km/h). Example: 10 km/h → 60 ÷ 10 = 6:00/km. 8 km/h → 60 ÷ 8 = 7:30/km (0.5 min = 30 seconds).
What is pace per mile and how do I convert it?
Pace per mile is used mainly in English-speaking countries. 1 mile = 1.60934 km. Pace per mile = pace per km × 1.60934. Example: 5:00/km × 1.60934 ≈ 8:03/mile.
What pace corresponds to common speeds?
4:00/km = 15 km/h; 4:30/km ≈ 13.3 km/h; 5:00/km = 12 km/h; 6:00/km = 10 km/h; 7:00/km ≈ 8.6 km/h; 8:00/km = 7.5 km/h; 10:00/km = 6 km/h (brisk walk).
What is a good pace for a beginner runner?
A good beginner pace is one where you can hold a conversation: typically 7:00–10:00 min/km (6–8.5 km/h). Focus on consistency rather than speed; you will naturally get faster over weeks.
What pace do I need to finish a marathon in 4 hours?
Marathon (42.195 km) in 4 h (240 min) requires 240 ÷ 42.195 ≈ 5:41/km (≈10.55 km/h). In 3:30 h ≈ 4:58/km; in 3:00 h ≈ 4:16/km; in 5:00 h ≈ 7:06/km.
How does the treadmill display relate to running pace?
Treadmills show speed in km/h. Common settings: 6 km/h = 10:00/km (walk); 8 km/h = 7:30/km (jog); 10 km/h = 6:00/km; 12 km/h = 5:00/km; 14 km/h ≈ 4:17/km. A 1% incline approximates outdoor running.
What is the difference between pace and speed in running?
Pace (min/km) tells you how long it takes to cover one kilometre — lower is faster. Speed (km/h) tells you how many kilometres you cover per hour — higher is faster. Runners typically use pace because it is more intuitive during training.
How do I calculate total run time from pace and distance?
Time (minutes) = pace (min/km) × distance (km). Example: 10 km at 5:00/km = 5 × 10 = 50 min. Half-marathon (21.1 km) at 6:00/km = 6 × 21.1 = 126.6 min ≈ 2:06:36.
How do I read pace from my Garmin, Polar or Suunto watch?
Sport watches show pace as MM:SS per km or mile. "5:30" means 5 min 30 sec per km = 5.5 min/km = 10.91 km/h. GPS accuracy is typically ±2%. Use this calculator to quickly convert between pace and km/h.
The result is indicative. GPS and treadmill speed readings may differ from actual values by ±2–3%.
